Drawing on the ancient traditions of the Church welcoming adult converts to follow Jesus, the RCIA process consists of four stages. They are:
The precatechumenate is a period of inquiry and typically lasts about 3 months. You might think of this stage as a type of “courtship,” as you will get to know Jesus Christ and his Church. Some introductory topics include Faith, Sacred Scripture, Jesus Christ, the Holy Mass, and an introduction to the Sacraments. This is a time for listening, learning, asking questions and most of all, discerning if God is calling you to the Catholic Church. Like courtship, there is no commitment at this time; you are just getting to know more about the church.
Again calling to mind the courtship analogy, this period is like “going steady” with someone that you’re serious about. This step of the process runs for about four months and focuses on instruction in Catholic teachings and practice, the Sacraments and marriage and sexuality. Weekend Mass will be required along with the dismissal. As with the period of inquiry, time and attention will be given to prayer and discernment of entering the Catholic Church at Easter.
Purification and Enlightenment
The 3rd period, Purification and Enlightenment last about 6 weeks and coincides with Lent. This is a time of prayer, fasting and personal reflection on what it means to be a follower of Christ. In thinking of courtship, this period can be likened to the time of engagement, when you’re intending to make full and free commitment to enter the Church. This period culminates at the Easter Vigil, when those seeking to enter the Catholic Church receive the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism (or Profession of Faith, if already baptized), Confirmation and Holy Eucharist.
This is the fourth and final period which lasts for 7 weeks and concludes at Pentecost. During this time, the Catholic way of life and prayer will be reflected upon and experienced more deeply. It is also a time of growth as your understanding and faith matures so you can participate more fully in Holy Mass and in the life of the Church.
Sessions are held every Thursday evening from 7:00-9:00PM in the school building. Accommodations can be made for those with scheduling conflicts.
