Dear Friends,
By our nature, Catholics are life-long learners.
Our Catholic Faith is a treasure that has no end, but it is our joy and responsibility to learn the rich heritage given to us. Through Sacred Scripture (compiled by the Catholic Church in the fourth century), and Sacred Tradition (handed down orally from the days of the Apostles), we are able to learn from Jesus Christ through His One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.
Why is it so important to "know our faith"? Isn't it enough to just say we believe in Jesus, or read the Bible? No. Even the enemy of Christ "believed in Him", and as St. Peter said in regards to the Epistles of St. Paul, they have "certain things difficult to understand, which the unlearned and unstable distort, just as they do the rest of the Scriptures also, to their own destruction" (2 Peter 3:16).
The GOOD NEWS is that God has revealed Himself to us, and all of humanity is inivited by God to be in a loving relationsip with the Father, Son, & Holy Spirit. So, to the best of each person's ability and with God's Grace, we pray, study, learn, obey and love. Our destiny is to go to God in Heaven, because we came from God, and we belong entirely to God.
It is by living our faith that we fulfill the purpose for which we were created. By believing what God has revealed, we know God. By knowing God, we love Him. By practicing what we learn, and by obeying God's commands, we serve Him.
"He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me" (John 14:21)
So, yes, it is absolutely necessary for us to "know our faith".
We also know we are to love our neighbor as ourselves. So, if the most important thing to do for our own eternal happiness is to practice our Catholic Faith, then we also must share it with others, which is what it means to evangelize. Our Lord, Jesus Christ commanded:
“Go and make disciples” (Matthew 28:19)
Through prayer, continuing formation, living a Catholic life within our family, and being active members of our church community, we can fullfill the commands given to us by Our Lord. The Letter to the Hebrews reminds the faithful:
"Encourage one another"
(Heb 10:25)
