In the Archdiocese of Kansas City, 2nd grade is a year of preparation to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. Preparation occurs primarily in the home, and is supplemented either in Catholic Schools or after-school Religious Education program. 
Children may participate in the traditional sacrament preparation model or in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Model.
