The "Ordinary of the Mass" consists of the parts of the Mass that do not change from day to day. The "Proper of the Mass" consists of texts and music peculiar to a given day in the liturgical calendar. At St. Michael, we use three primary musical settings of the Ordinary:
(1) A Parish Setting: the "Mass in Honor of Saint Michael" by Kevin Vogt
(2) A Diocesan Setting: the "Mass for Christian Unity" by Jan Vermulst
(3) A Universal Setting: the "Missa Jubilate Deo," compiled and promulgated by Pope Paul VI.
The Universal Setting is in Latin, the official liturgical language of the Roman Catholic Church, and most of the melodies of this setting are very ancient, representing the earliest compositions intended for congregational singing. These settings are sung throughout the world in Catholic churches, and they express our unity with the Universal Church. To these chants are added below two of the most commonly sung hymns to the Blessed Virgin, the "Salve Regina" and the "Regina" caeli, sometimes sung at the end of Mass, and always sung at the end of the day.
Two ways to learn these chants: (1) "Osmosis" (listening and then trying to sing when ready), and (2) doing a little advance preparation in the privacy of our own home! Here are some helpful resources:
