What is the Year of St. Joseph? In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared St. Joseph the Patron of the Universal Church. The Year of St. Joseph was announced in honor of the 150th anniversary of his proclamation as patron of the Universal Church.
What makes it a Year of St. Joseph? We can ask for the intercession of the saints at any time but this year we are especially encouraged to ask St. Joseph for his intercession. Why do we need a Year of St. Joseph? In addition to the liturgical calendar, popes can set aside time for the Church to reflect more deeply on a specific aspect of Catholic teaching or belief. Pope Francis established this year so that "every member of the faithful, following his example, may strengthen their life of faith daily in the complete fulfillment of God’s will."
Who can participate in the Year of St. Joseph? Everyone! This year is for all the faithful, whether you already have a strong devotion to St. Joseph or if you don't know anything about his life.
